Silkworm is a completely transformed insect going through all the steps of egg, larva, pupa, moth and gets through winter as an egg. And mulberry leaves begin to be out in spring, one or two lavae are born from this egg. A newborn silkworm larva is hairy and dark and called as hairy newly hatched silkworm because it looks like an ant. This newly hatched silkworm weighs about 0.5mg and after this newly hatched silkworm eats mulberry leaves night and day for 4 days, it casts off the skin, that is, gets old. Usually, the biggest silkworm is 5-year-old silkworm and casts off the skin 4 times (newborn newly hatched silkworm is 1 year old) and spins a cocoon and the weight at this time is about 5 ~ 6g and increases about 10,000 times of newborn newly hatched silkworm.

Molting of silkworm is a necessary process for silkworm growth. That is, the skin of silkworm grows only to some extent and therefore, silkworm must change into big and new skin. About a week after silkworm casts off the last skin, the body of silkworm is filled with silk thread. And then, it finds a place to build a house without eating mulberry any more. It spins a cocoon while drawing ¡®8¡¯ or ¡®S¡¯ shape from silk gland through spinneret of silkworm.

The length of thread spined by one silkworm is about 1,500m ~ 1,700m. About two days after spinning a cocoon, the cocoon is almost complete. At this point, carefully cut the cocoon and you can find out that the body of silkworm is much reduced. It gets small because the body filled with silk thread by about 40% spit out thread to spin a cocoon. Now silkworm that gets smaller like this is transformed into a pupa in a cocoon. About a week after starting to build a cocoon, silkworm is transformed into a pupa and in one more week, it is transformed into a moth.

After transforming, a moth comes out through the cocoon usually in the early morning. The body of a new moth is wet and wings are also folded but after a while, water is dried and it has its shape. Since a female moth has many eggs in the body, it is usually bigger and fatter than a male. When this female allures a thin male, it blows up alluring gland at the end of the tail and secretes a sex hormones, pheromone and a male who came by smelling the scent mates with the female. Now a female that finishes mating is ready to lay eggs. Usually, one moth lays about 500 ~ 700 eggs and about a week after laying eggs, it finishes the life of about 40 days.
